Michele
Owens-Pearce, B.A., M.A., a renowned educator, dancer, choreographer,
and artist-in-residence, Michele has worked with hundreds of students
during her 24 year career in dance education. Her award winning work
in graduate school involved the connection between self-esteem enrichment
and modern dance education for children. In 1993, Michele was one of
five dance educators in the nation chosen for the NEA's Artcorps Program.
With support from the Austin Arts Commission and the Texas Commission
on the Arts, Michele has directed dance residency projects in the public
schools for the last ten years. One such project is "Wings"
at Crockett High School, which includes a company of high school students
with disabilities who tour and perform in public schools. This is the
9th year that Michele will be directing a modern dance school for children
at Cafe Dance. A loving and innovative teacher, Michele creates an environment
where students can discover the power of dance to express and celebrate
life. Michele has been grant funded for the last 12 years and has directed
a modern dance school for children at Cafe Dance for the past 10 years.

The
Classes For 2007-2008, six classes are being offered in modern dance. The classes are carefully structured to provide developmentally appropriate dance curriculum for all students. The aim of the curriculum is to stimulate the physical, emotional, and mental development of students. In class students will: Express - The body is the instrument in dance. Modern technique develops expressive use of the body with a focus on body awareness, problem solving, self-expression, and range of motion. Create - Students are at the forefront of the dance experiment during improvisation and composition exercises. The creative process is understood through exploration with the basic elements of movement. Collaborate - Students learn how to support each other and share diverse ideas during group collaborations. They develop sensitivity and respect toward each other and come to know and value themselves as important members of a group. |
